HOW TO DECLUTTER YOUR WARDROBE?

No matter that you live as a minimalist or you like surrounding yourself with many items, from time to time is good to declutter your wardrobe. Wardrobe decluttering will make it easier for you to create daily outfits and you will get rid of things that do not fit anymore. Declutter wardrobe in these 4 steps.

Take a glass and have fun?

Maybe you remember one of the scenes from ❛ Sex in the City ❜ the movie when Carrie and her friends drink champagne and declutter her famous wardrobe. It looked like having fun. Wardrobe decluttering sounds easy and trivial but is not.

Of course, you can do it spontaneously with a glass of champagne, but with a plan will be much more effective. (❋You can have a glass of champagne with you anyway;))

STEP ONE ✦ Right preparations before decluttering your wardrobe ✦

Do you know your silhouette?

Before decluttering your wardrobe, you should know something about your body type. Especially if something changed in your body (e.g. gain or losing weight, plastic surgeries, etc.).

Check what styles of clothes will highlight your silhouette advantages. What type of clothes could cover disadvantages. And what is not appropriate for you. With this knowledge, you will be able to throw away items not fit you.

Color analysis

As you know different types of garments can highlight your body type, but colors as well. So you should also be aware of what colors fit your color type (to your skin tone, hair, eyes). Do you look better in warm or cold shades? Besides if you feel and look nice in purple, is good to know in what kind of shade of purple. Get rid of clothes in colors that make you look sad or tired.

Prepare yourself mentally for this process

Mental preparation is important, no matter how ridiculous it sounds. You can take out all garments from the wardrobe, put them in order, and put them back. But it won’t make any sense. Promise yourself to throw away (or donate) everything that is not serving you anymore. And it will be not easy to get rid of your favorite but damaged undergarments or other things that you like but makes you look bad. That’s why you have to prepare yourself before.

If you are not enough strong, ask someone for help. Someone honest who will tell you the truth. Best friend? Mom? Or a personal stylist?

Take your time

Make sure you have some time available to work on decluttering your wardrobe. It can take even a few hours, so do it when you will be rested. When you start decluttering your wardrobe, you’d better finish it the same day. The next day it will be harder for you to go back to decluttering. Turn on your favourite podcast or playlist to make the process more enjoyable.

Things what you need:

▷water (or/and glass of champagne ;))

▷some snack

▷extra hangers

▷some cleaning products (when you take clothes out, is good to clean and refresh your closet)

▷robe (wear a robe and seamless underwear because you will be trying on your clothes)

STEP TWO ✦ Prepare 3 boxes / bags ✦

Box #1 TOSS

You will put into this box all the things that are: damaged (and you can’t fix it), dirty, too worn, ripped, stained etc.

Box #2 DONATE

You will put into this box all the things that somebody else can still use it. You can give to family or friends, but also charity institutions.

Box #3 MAYBE

If an item fits and is in a good condition but you simply can’t decide if you like it or not, put it in ‘maybe box’. You can back to this in few days or weeks and then decide, but be selective. Do not putt all things in this box 😉

Extra box SELL

It depends if you want to do it because you need to put some time and energy to add your items on online auctions and deal with a possible sale.

STEP THREE ✦ Selection ✦

Is time to declutter your wardrobe. Open the door, take everything out and examine each item. It sounds overwhelming but is the only right way to declutter your wardrobe. Trying and checking is very important because as a result, you have to select all things to the right boxes and decide what things stay with you.

But how to decide?

If you do it alone, there are some questions you should answer during examine each item.

➤When was the last time I wore this?

If was more than one year ago or if you don’t know it probably you will never wear it again. Time to say goodbye.

Excluding occasion-wear for example the big gala special dresses or ski wear

➤Is it still wearable?

No damage ripped, dirty, etc.

➤Does it fit my current body type?

We are all guilty of having ‘after losing weight jeans’, or other items in smaller sizes. But if you declutter your wardrobe during pregnancy is makes sense. After pregnancy, you will need your regular smaller clothes. In the other situation is wasting space only. Besides, you are not able to change your size overnight, so after losing weight, you will reward yourself with new clothes. Now, keep only the clothes that really match your size and body type.

➤Is this color makes my face bright?

As I mentioned before, knowledge about your color type is essential to creating flattering outfits. Check if blouse/dress/scarf etc, in this color makes your face fresh, bright and pretty. If yes – keep it. If no, say au revoir!

➤Is it comfortable to wear?

No matter of label, fabric, or price, if you wear something and you feel uncomfortable in it, throw things away. ‘Painful’ shoes are the most common thing in a wardrobe. Nothing that makes you feel bad or painful is worth wearing.

Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury

➤Can you mix it with other things in your wardrobe?

Probably you have at least one thing that is completely different from the rest of your wardrobe. Maybe you bought this at an amazing sale or somebody gave you it. If you don’t have any idea how to style it, put it into a donate box.

➤Does it fit into my current lifestyle?

Style changing over years (or over months sometimes), but life also. Maybe you changed job, and you don’t need elegant office wear anymore? Or maybe your new work requires office wear and you have only casual things? This question shows you what you don’t need, but also what you need to buy. Decluttering is not only throws things away but could help you prepare yourself for something new or close old paths.

STEP FOUR ✦ Preparation of your fresh new wardrobe ✦

Once you’ve done your declutter, before you put garments into the closet, clean the entire inside of the wardrobe or chest of drawers, hangers, etc. You can hang the fragrance sachets also. Do the laundry, take the clothes to the dry-clean if it needs it.

➤ Take care of your items

Take care of your clothes in the right way. Regularly clean your jewelry and protect your leather accessories. Hanging sweaters in a long term can cause the shoulders to stretch out irreversibly. Especially cashmere! It’s better to fold a sweater to maintain its shape. Be gentle with your garments and accessories and it will serve you for many years.
